A service consists of a set of related software components and their functionalities. Each service has an associated service description. A service also has an associated Service Level Agreement (SLA).
Cloud connects the devices, gateways, systems, applications, services, things, businesses and manufacturing processes.
Cloud services can be considered as distribution service, a service for linking:
- Resources (computing, storage, processing, networking functions)
- Servers
- Applications/services/processes
Software as a Service (SaaS) makes software available to an application/service/process on demand.
Platform as a Service (PaaS) makes a platform available to a developer or application/service/process.
Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) makes infrastructure (computing, storage, network) available to a user or developer on demand.
Data as a Service (DaaS) makes data at a data center available to a user or developer on demand.
Role of Cloud in IoT
Cloud platform in an IoT system uses or provides:
- Data store
- Connection between APIs and applications
- Data connection between services
- Integration between applications/services with enterprise applications/services and analysis
Following figure shows the data collection, storage and computation using cloud. It contains:
- Data collection from devices/sensor network
- Local files
- Dedicated data store at coordinating node
- Local edge node with a distributed DBMS
- Internet connected server
- Internet connected data store at an enterprise server or at a data center
M2M/IoT Device Connected PaaS Clouds
Following are some of the widely used PaaS clouds by organizations:
- IBM Internet of Things Foundation (IITF) connected devices PaaS
- CISCO IoT PaaS
- AWS IoT PaaS
- TCS Connected Universe PaaS
